Interactive Bible Study: "DATING AND MARRIAGE – A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE "
By UCG Elder Mr. Lonnie Johnson
Below is an outline and some notes from the speaker that were used in the interactive bible study.  This does not include additional comments made by the presenter or comments that were made by the singles.

Discussion Questions:

1.  How does God feel about marriage?

Gen. 2:18-24 And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. 21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”  24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

God was the creator of marriage between a man and woman, it was good.

Prov. 18:22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the LORD.

Look at what a positive statement made by Solomon.

Prov. 31:10 Who can find a virtuous wife?  For her worth is far above rubies. finding a virtuous mate is without value.

Eph. 5
Paul likens marriage relationship to the relationship of Christ to His Church.

Rev. 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.”

Rev. 21:9  Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife. show the Church described as the bride and wife of Christ.

2.  What do you consider to be one of the major challenges for single adults in the Church today with regard to dating and marrying?

· Meeting potential mates
· Loneliness, lack of a companion or children
· Keeping self control

(I Cor. 7:6-9) But I say this as a concession, not as a commandment. 7 For I wish that all men were even as I myself. But each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that. 8 But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am; 9 but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

3.  Does God give a specific command as to marrying outside one’s faith or does He leave it to individuals to decide for themselves?

If no specific command from God is given in the scriptures, does God leave us with no guidance or does He give us ample examples from which a Christian can make an informed decision in this matter? What are some of those examples from the Old Testament? What are some examples given in the New Testament?

Gen. 26:34-35; Gen. 27:46

When Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35 And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah

And Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these who are the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”

Isaac and Rebekah’s family was troubled by Easu’s marriage.

Ex. 34:11-16  Observe what I command you this day. Behold, I am driving out from before you the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. 12 Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be a snare in your midst. 13 But you shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images 14 (for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God), 15 lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they play the harlot with their gods and make sacrifice to their gods, and one of them invites you and you eat of his sacrifice, 16 and you take of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters play the harlot with their gods and make your sons play the harlot with their gods.
God’s command to His people as then entered the land He was giving to them.

Deut. 7:1-6 When the LORD your God brings you into the land which you go to possess, and has cast out many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you, 2 and when the LORD your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them. 3 Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to their son, nor take their daughter for your son. 4 For they will turn your sons away from following Me, to serve other gods; so the anger of the LORD will be aroused against you and destroy you suddenly. 5 But thus you shall deal with them: you shall destroy their altars, and break down their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images,[a] and burn their carved images with fire. 6 “For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth.

Moses repeats God’s warning.

Ezra 9:1-6  When these things were done, the leaders came to me, saying, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, with respect to the abominations of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2 For they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed is mixed with the peoples of those lands. Indeed, the hand of the leaders and rulers has been foremost in this trespass.” 3 So when I heard this thing, I tore my garment and my robe, and plucked out some of the hair of my head and beard, and sat down astonished. 4 Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel assembled to me, because of the transgression of those who had been carried away captive, and I sat astonished until the evening sacrifice. 5 At the evening sacrifice I arose from my fasting; and having torn my garment and my robe, I fell on my knees and spread out my hands to the LORD my God. 6 And I said: “O my God, I am too ashamed and humiliated to lift up my face to You, my God; for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has grown up to the heavens.

Ezra addressed this problem in Israel after the exile.

Neh. 13:23-27  In those days I also saw Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and could not speak the language of Judah, but spoke according to the language of one or the other people. 25 So I contended with them and cursed them, struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters as wives to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons or yourselves. 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, who was beloved of his God; and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless pagan women caused even him to sin. 27 Should we then hear of your doing all this great evil, transgressing against our God by marrying pagan women?”

(I Kings 11:1-4) But King Solomon loved many foreign women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh: women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites— 2 from the nations of whom the LORD had said to the children of Israel, “You shall not intermarry with them, nor they with you. Surely they will turn away your hearts after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. 3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. 4 For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the LORD his God, as was the heart of his father David.

Nehiamah had to deal with marriages to pagan women by Judah.

I Cor. 7:39 A wife is bound by law as long as her husband lives; but if her husband dies, she is at liberty to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.

When a person remarries, they should marry in the faith.

II Cor. 6:14-16 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:   “ I will dwell in them  And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.

Paul gives strong admonition on who we should become married to. (Deut. 22:10) You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together.

We see this principle used in a practical application of farming.

4.  So if you are unmarried, free to marry, and desire to be married, what should you do? ·Mat. 11:28-30 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.
Rather than becoming unequally yoked in marriage to someone who is not a believer, focus your life on serving God and His people. (Ruben’s example)

Mark 10:29 So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s,

Remember the reward promised to those who faithfully serve God.

Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

What we may deal with now in our physical life, doesn’t compare with what God will give to us. · Not being married isn’t the end of one’s life. Paul stated that to remain unmarried as he was didn’t make you less of a person. In fact notice what he says in

I Cor. 7:25-33. Now concerning virgins: I have no commandment from the Lord; yet I give judgment as one whom the Lord in His mercy has made trustworthy. 26 I suppose therefore that this is good because of the present distress—that it is good for a man to remain as he is: 27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Are you loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife. 28 But even if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Nevertheless such will have trouble in the flesh, but I would spare you. 29 But this I say, brethren, the time is short, so that from now on even those who have wives should be as though they had none, 30 those who weep as though they did not weep, those who rejoice as though they did not rejoice, those who buy as though they did not possess, 31 and those who use this world as not misusing it. For the form of this world is passing away. 32 But I want you to be without care. He who is unmarried cares for the things of the Lord—how he may please the Lord. 33 But he who is married cares about the things of the world—how he may please his wife.

If one has self control over his passions, he is able to devote his life to serving God without the distractions necessitated by the responsibilities that come with marriage and children.

· Marriage is not a requirement, nor a guarantee that you can live a fuller, richer life. Just get involved with serving in the Church. Travel at every opportunity to meet other singles in God’s Church. Serve in you local congregation in every way possible. Put God at the controls of your life and be content with what He chooses for you as far as marriage. If you do, your happiness will be fulfilled in the Lord.

5.  If we believe we are actually living in the time of the end, what is one of the biggest spiritual elements that a single person in God’s Church today must possess if they desire to find and marry someone who is also converted?

· Habakkuk 1: 1-17; The burden which the prophet Habakkuk saw.

The Prophet’s Question
   2 O LORD, how long shall I cry,
     And You will not hear?
     Even cry out to You, “Violence!”
     And You will not save.
      3 Why do You show me iniquity,
     And cause me to see trouble?
     For plundering and violence are before me;
     There is strife, and contention arises.
      4 Therefore the law is powerless,
     And justice never goes forth.
     For the wicked surround the righteous;
     Therefore perverse judgment proceeds.

The LORD’s Reply
   5 “ Look among the nations and watch—
     Be utterly astounded!
     For I will work a work in your days
     Which you would not believe, though it were told you.
      6 For indeed I am raising up the Chaldeans,
     A bitter and hasty nation
     Which marches through the breadth of the earth,
     To possess dwelling places that are not theirs.
      7 They are terrible and dreadful;
     Their judgment and their dignity proceed from themselves.
      8 Their horses also are swifter than leopards,
     And more fierce than evening wolves.
     Their chargers charge ahead;
     Their cavalry comes from afar;
     They fly as the eagle that hastens to eat.
      9 “ They all come for violence;
     Their faces are set like the east wind.
     They gather captives like sand.
      10 They scoff at kings,
     And princes are scorned by them.
     They deride every stronghold,
     For they heap up earthen mounds and seize it.
      11 Then his mind[b] changes, and he transgresses;
     He commits offense,
     Ascribingthis power to his god.”
The Prophet’s Second Question
   12 Are You not from everlasting,
     O LORD my God, my Holy One?
     We shall not die.
     O LORD, You have appointed them for judgment;
     O Rock, You have marked them for correction.
      13 You are of purer eyes than to behold evil,
     And cannot look on wickedness.
     Why do You look on those who deal treacherously,
     And hold Your tongue when the wicked devours
     A person more righteous than he?
      14 Why do You make men like fish of the sea,
     Like creeping things that have no ruler over them?
      15 They take up all of them with a hook,
     They catch them in their net,
     And gather them in their dragnet.
     Therefore they rejoice and are glad.
      16 Therefore they sacrifice to their net,
     And burn incense to their dragnet;
     Because by them their share is sumptuous
     And their food plentiful.
      17 Shall they therefore empty their net,
     And continue to slay nations without pity?

Habakkuk 2:1-4  I will stand my watch
     And set myself on the rampart,
     And watch to see what He will say to me,
     And what I will answer when I am corrected.

The Just Live by Faith

2 Then the LORD answered me and said:

     “ Write the vision
     And make it plain on tablets,
     That he may run who reads it.
      3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time;
     But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie.
     Though it tarries, wait for it;
     Because it will surely come,
     It will not tarry.
      4 “ Behold the proud,
     His soul is not upright in him;
     But the just shall live by his faith

Faith.
